My family recently moved into our first home in the suburbs. We’re on a very busy street without sidewalks so none of the kids on the block knew each other. This book has really helped us learn how to connect to our new neighbors. We started throwing neighborhood parties for all occassions, and the kids on the block finally know each other.
This book has so many fun and inventive ideas, adorable drawings, and easy recipes that work well for crowds. Three new families have moved in this year and the book has given us wonderful ideas to welcome them! (We now bring welcome baskets that include a list of important places in the area.) I wish someone in the neighoborhood had read this book before we had moved in!

I am always on the lookout for fun things to do – fun party suggestions. This book was the most fun I’ve had in a while just reading all the recipes and ideas. It is loaded. I was thinking BLOCK PARTY when I ordered it, and am truly excited to throw one now that I am armed with so many fun ideas, but so many of the parties presented would also work with ANY group of people, they don’t have to be your next door neighbors. These parties would work for getting fellow co-workers acquainted (the bowling party would be a great company Christmas Party), or helping church people get acquainted, and a couple of them would even work for a family reunion.

I was actually jealous of all the “neighborly” stuff that was presented. I wish I lived in such a friendly, caring, involved, and fun neighborhood as some of the folks who’s stories were featured. I think I’m going to try and be courageous and give some of these ideas a whirl. I haven’t tried any of the recipes (there are a lot of them) but they all look yummy.

If you are into throwing parties and are also yearning to be the chairman of neighborhood social committee (held back until this moment only by the lack of creative ideas) you’ll *L*O*V*E* that you found this book!!!!

I read the other reviews before I wrote this, and I couldn’t help but notice that NOT ONE of the “reviewers” said anything about the recipes. Why? Because they are terrible! Let me explain: I am a cookbook reader, collector, cook and baker. I read/review and try cookbooks ALL THE TIME. This cookbook is terrible! The recipes just do not work – and I’ve tried a lot of them.
As far as ideas go, if you want to get really chummy with your neighbors, then buy this book – that’s where it gets 2 stars from me.

Every section of this book gives great plans for having fun in your neighborhood. I live in an area that already has scheduled events, but this gives many more ideas for other opportunities to involve those not already involved.
I also like the sections on what to do when someone moves into your neighborhood, has a prolonged illness, or if someone dies… it give many good ideas on meals or practical things to do.

Although cheap in price, I expected to at least have decent graphics. The radio feature is unnecessary and efforts would have been better spent to provide a better game (or games). The slot machine feature is a joke on about a par level with the first “Pong” game … absolutely boring and hard to even see.

Lots of fun. Auto idle shutdown preserves your winnings. Good fun to pass “wait” time.

  7. Brennan says

This is a disappointing game, the screen is too small, and you cannot accumulate your score. You must turn the game off to halt the battery use and once you do this your high score cannot be retrieved.

  8. Faust says

This is an awsome handheld. Not only are there variations on the poker game but a radio as well! This is so much fun to play with.

  9. Dickinson says

Saw a bunch of these at Burning Man this year, and a couple at the San Diego Decompression. Bought one and will buy a second one for next year burn. Stands up to wind, huge area inside, very versatile. Put your tent underneath or use it as a tent itself. And the price is shockingly low!

  10. Freed says

First off, I bought form other than Amazon. I’ve only set it up in my yard to get an idea of how to put it up and take it down, and unfortunately discover if parts are missing. If you call the phone number on the insert for missing parts (which apparently happens a lot more often than it should) be prepared to be on hold for more than 30 minutes to then be told by the customer dis-service folks that you need more cryptic information. If you don’t have the cryptic infomation they want then you will have to call back again. I was missing the tent stakes. Rather than call back again I will replace the stakes out of my own pocket. I think that was the intent of customer dis-service all the while. Too bad such a lackadasial attitude by customer dis-service undermines what would otherwise be a good product. A product is only as good as the people that stand behind it, thus 2 stars only.

  11. Josephson says

Held up great under adverse conditions, wind storms, dust storms, etc. The central pole I drilled out a little larger so it could take a piece of rebar but otherwise, used it as is. The tent stakes it comes with are a little questionable in high winds but we used them anyway without failure. Assembles quickly and great for providing alot of shade.

  12. McNeish says

It goes up and comes down in minutes with 2 people (may need more help in high winds) and has a cavernous interior space. The extra shade cloth does a good job of blocking sun while letting air through, and the netting is a godsend when the mosquitoes come out. Due to the metallic backed fabric, it’s several degrees cooler inside than outside, and even cooler when the screens are opened. Good quality fabric & construction will clearly last a long time. And thankfully the bag expands so that you can close it again after you clumsily re-fold it and stuff the fabric back in. Brought it to a big beach gathering and since more than a dozen of us in chairs fit in comfortably, everyone wanted to know where to get one! May need better stakes for the beach, though – the ones it comes with aren’t very long & probably wouldn’t withstand much more than a 10mph wind. We’ll probably pick up some dog stakes for next time.
